There are many myths circulating about clinical depression. Some believe that depression isn’t a real illness, and that nothing can be done about it. According to another common myth, depression will just go away, and therefore no depression treatment is necessary. None of these myths are true.

  • Alternative therapies: Herbal supplements, acupuncture and changes in diet and exercise may help alleviate depression symptoms. Talk to your doctor first before using herbs, as they can interact with other medications you may be taking. These depression treatment methods are often combined with psychotherapy.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): ECT depression treatment may help with severe depression. It works by passing an electrical current through the brain. A possible side effect of ECT is temporary memory loss.
